Hiding from hearing God’s voice?
by Esme Schmitt
I never knew this…but it seems I am an expert at hiding from ‘hearing God’s voice’. During the month of December I experienced a mini burn-out and took a few weeks to recover. It was an excellent opportunity to recover, get refreshed and find my breath again. But what did I end up doing in that time? I watched a lot (and I mean A LOT) of series on tv! To be honest, I did not spend much time with God.
After doing this for some time, I started to think about what I was doing and why. Why was I suddenly ‘hiding’ from hearing God’s voice? What lies have I been believing that made me act in this way? I knew I needed to answer these questions so that I could have the boldness, again, to meet with God and to Hear His voice.
When Adam and Eve chose to obey the serpent, they became ashamed of who they were. Maybe they even felt that they were not good enough to be with God any more. As a result, when God came into the garden to talk and walk with them; they suddenly felt the need to hide away from Him (Genesis 3:10). This was truly a silly reaction, since God truly wanted to be with them even after their disobedience! And this obedience was no small matter – it had a big impact on all the generations to come!
Whatever the reason is for your hiding, know that God’s love for you never changes! Psalm 136:1-2 states this clearly (see the NIV version). Boldly bring your issues to the cross and let God’s forgiveness wash it away. He will never turn His back on you.
We live in a society where we can occupy our minds every moment of every day. Social media, television, internet, friends and many more things can easily fill our thinking. These things can also become our places of hiding. We can immerse ourselves in it to hide away from the voice of God. The shocking reality is that many times we don’t even know we are hiding, we are simply keeping busy and doing things. So recognising that you are in fact hiding from the voice of God, is already a revelation that can bring breakthrough.
Position yourself today to hear from God’s voice again. His Words will bring life to you. He loves you and wants to talk with you…spend time with you.
